Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb.)

■Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb.):
Leaf, seed and fruit of Eriobotrya japonica are used widely. The leaf is also used as a traditional medicine in China and Japan from the ancient time and the fruit has been eaten as a valuable fruit at the early summer.
Eriobotrya japonica is of southern China origin, and also cultivated in warm regions of East Asia. About 10 species exist. It is cultivated in Shikoku, Chiba as well as Kyushu region in Japan.
The scientific name "Eriobotrya" comes from "erion (sheep)" "botrys" (grape clusters) in Greek and means that branch and leaf are covered with soft hair, and fruits grow in the shape of a bunch. It is named as "Biwa" in Japan because the shapes of the leaf or fruit resemble the musical instrument "Biwa".
