Ribes nigrum L. (fruits)

Blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum L.) is a species of edible berry originated from central/northern Europe and Asia It is also called "cassis" in French. The ripe fruits have a black color and a 1cm diameter, which have been used in jams, juices, wines and so on in Europe for many years. The blackcurrant flavored liqueur "Creme de Cassis" is very famous in the world. Blackcurrant fruits mainly contain cyanidin-3-rutinoside (C3R) and delphinidin-3-rutinoside (D3R), which are the characteristic components of blackcurrant and not found in blueberries. It was suggested that C3R can stimulate regeneration of rhodopsin, which is a pigment of the retina responsible for both the formation of the photoreceptor cells and the first events in the perception of light.
